Join us as we read and discuss Heather McGhee's compelling book, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. We'll break the book into three sections for easier discussion as we seek to deepen our understanding around the costs of systemic racism within our society. You need not attend all sessions to participate and a Zoom option will be provided. A limited number of books will be available for purchase in the office for $7.00. If you have any questions, reach out to Sarah McCarty at sarah.mccarty@parkridgecommunitychurch.org. Th., Mar. 7, 7:00: Ch. 5-Ch. 7 Mon., Mar. 18, 7:30: Ch. 8-Ch. 10 The Sum of Us Book Discussion Session 2 - Th., March 7, 7:00-8:00 pm 1. Why would laborers like the white auto workers McGhee describes refuse to unionize? How does this enhance your understanding of the “mystery” of people who vote against their own interests? (taken from www.HeatherMcGhee.com ) 2. Heather McGhee makes the case that it is in the best interest of the very wealthy and powerful to keep poor and middle-class people divided by race to prevent them from uniting against the capitalist class. What stories of your faith might illustrate this kind of division? (taken from Rev. Grace Kozak for Christian Theological Seminary, www.cts.edu) 3. McGhee writes that white people are the most segregated people in America. What are some of the costs of continuing to segregate like this? What are the benefits of integration - both culturally and economically? (taken from www.HeatherMcGhee.com ) 4. What are some ways white people can work to challenge zero-sum thinking? (taken from www.HeatherMcGhee.com ) Additional Resources: www.thesumofuspodcast.com
